Hecla President and CEO Phil Baker received the Selwyn Blaylock Canadian Mining Excellence Award named after a metallurgist and mining executive who played a significant role in starting the mining industry at the turn of the century. The award, given by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM), recognizes an individual who has demonstrated distinguished service to Canada through exceptional achievement in the field of mining, metallurgy, or geology.
“I am honored to receive an award that pays tribute to a man who was a true pioneer in the mining industry and who made so many invaluable contributions during his lifetime,” said Phillips S. Baker, President and CEO. “Although Mr. Blaylock last worked in the mining industry almost 80 years ago, Hecla has a present-day connection to him. He was integral in the development of the Trail Smelter in Trail, B.C. which has been a longstanding customer of Hecla.”
