The Hecla Charitable Foundation made two grants to Discovery Southeast, a non-profit that introduces children and families to the outdoors. Through the donations, Discovery Southeast can afford a good, reliable van to use for day camps that serve over 400 local children each year, and offer sliding scale tuition and unlimited scholarships, so cost is never a barrier.
The foundation also sponsored Nature Studies, a hands-on outdoor education program for Southeast Alaskan elementary classrooms. With the grant, the program now covers all elementary grades K-5.
